254 SMO (UNS S31254 / W.Nr. 1.4547) is a super-austenitic stainless steel known for its exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Developed for use in highly aggressive environments, especially those rich in chlorides like seawater and brine, 254 SMO combines high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. This combination gives it superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels like 316L or 904L, making it a preferred material in industries such as chemical processing, desalination, offshore oil and gas, and pulp and paper.

254 SMO sheets, plates, and coils are widely used in the fabrication of heat exchangers, pressure vessels, tanks, marine components, and flue-gas cleaning systems. These products are available in a wide range of thicknesses, from thin foils and coils (as low as 0.02 mm) to heavy plates up to 100 mm thick. Surface finishes such as No.1, 2B, BA, mirror, and hairline are offered depending on the application, with widths ranging from 650 mm to 3000 mm and lengths up to 6000 mm or more.
